Inappropriate Urination Series

1. If your cat is urinating inappriopriately, there may be a medical reason. Bring your cat to your veterinarian so they can run tests to make sure there are no problems like a urinary tract infection, urinary stones, bladder inflammation or diabetes.

2. If your cat is urinating inappropriately and she has no medical reason to be doing so, make sure you have at least one more litter box than the number of cats in the household.

3. If your cat just started urinating inappropriately, there may have been a source of stress in the household. Some examples include, a new pet, a dominate cat blocking access to the litter box, a new child or person, remodeling project, etc.

4. If your cat just started urinating inappropriately, there may have been a recent change in her litter. Try switching back to her original litter. If there has not been a recent change, try different types of litter. There are a number of types of litter substrate including clay, wheat, corn and recycled newspaper. Make sure there is plenty of litter in the box (at least 3-4 inches deep.)

5. If your cat is urinating inappropriately, he may be protesting his litter box. Older geriatric cats can experience pain when getting into and out of a taller litter box. Consider getting a litter box with low sides or a ramp.

6. Larger cats may have trouble using a small litter box. Consider purchasing a larger litter box. Storage Tupperware containers or sweater boxes work well too.

7. Cat's sense of smell is infinitely more sensitive than our own. If your cat is inappropriately urinating, they may feel as though their litter box is not clean enough. Clean your cat's litter box at least twice daily. Just think how much you prefer flushing your toilet rather than using an outhouse!
